All About Breast Shells

Some moms can benefit from the use of breast shells either during pregnancy, when nursing, or both. Basically, there are two types of breast shells: those to bring out an inverted or flat nipple or those used to bring comfort to sore nipples. Shells are worn in the bra during pregnancy or in between feedings, not over the nipple during a feeding (nipple shield).

Shells For Inverted or Flat Nipples

When the mother has an inverted or flat nipple often wearing breast shells during the last trimester of her pregnancy will help bring out the nipples so that they are easier for the baby to grasp onto. The shells work by applying gentle but firm pressure to the area surrounding the nipple. By doing this the adhesions under the skin which prevent the nipple from protruding well are loosened or broken, thus allowing the nipple to come out. Shells such as these should be worn during the day starting as early in the last trimester as possible. Time worn during the day should be increased gradually until they are worn all day. They should not be worn at night. Most moms find that a bra that gives extra room for the shell but which also is snug enough so that the shell stays in place well works best.

Shells for Sore Nipples

Shells for sore nipples bring comfort by preventing the bra or clothing from rubbing up against already tender nipple tissue. They also allow for maximum air flow by keeping any clothing or pad off the nipple itself which can speed healing. These type of shells can be worn in between feedings but should not be worn at night.

What To Look For In A Breast Shell

Breast shells should have air holes or vents to allow for good air flow which is essential to healthy breasts and nipples. Ideally, they will also have a shape which makes them discreet so that you can wear them out in public and still feel confident. Some shells have added inserts made of foam to absorb any breastmilk leakage.

General Warnings When Wearing Shells

Shells should not be worn at night and any milk that leaks into them should be discarded. They should be sterilized once a day by either running them through the top rack of a dishwasher or boiling them for about 10 minutes. Prolonged or frequent use of shells may cause excessive leaking.
